There's a lot of nomads or expats who get an apartment next to a highway in a cheap building and complain about how noisy the country is. This is just complete crap.
You just need to pick modern well built buildings. Vinhomes should be the baaseline, although there are developers who build higher quality. It's not that expensive and you can get a fine apartment without many issues. Another thing to look out for is the number of elevators. You NEED at least 6 elevators in your building. Mine has 9 right now (plus a freight elevator).
An old friend used to live in Saigon in a building with JUST 2 ELEVATORS and holy crap I hated visiting them. It would literally take like 5 minutes every time. DON'T DO IT. IT'S NOT WORTH IT.
Personal space doesn't exist here. If there elevators get crowded, people will REALLY CROWD IT. One time I was visiting a co-working place in Hanoi and I left in the evening. For the first time ever my butt was squished against some ladie's butt. It felt a bit violating. There is literally no room to turn around. People WILL crowd the elevators, and if the elevator weight alarm goes off they will look at the foreigner to exit, even if you weren't the last to get on.
